Water heaters, dishwashers, and garbage disposals were the most frequently reported improvement category, followed by HVAC and flooring-related projects.
Homeowners completed many projects themselves, but professionals performed nearly two out of every three reported projects.
Median costs in the survey ranged from $400 for security systems to $10,000 for roofing, a useful reminder that a clear plan should come before a price conversation.
Methodology and sources
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsors the American Housing Survey, and the U.S. Census Bureau conducts it.
The Census Bureau’s October 30, 2024 home-improvement release summarizes responses from owner-occupied households about improvement activity in the prior two years. The figures on this page use that release and its accompanying 2023 survey data.
